Faculty and Staff Awards
  • Professor Stephen Blackwell (Russian) was awarded a Lindsay Young Professorship in recognition of his distinguished teaching and scholarship at the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011.
  • Professor Luis Cano (Spanish) received an Excellence in Advising Award. At the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011, he was recognized for encouraging students to ask questions about their education and think about long- and short-term goals.
  • Professor Flavia Brizio-Skov (Italian) received a Ready for the World Award. At the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011, she was recognized for creating an exchange program with the University of Genoa, which will help to enhance intercultural and international awareness among students.
  • Professor Michael Handelsman (Spanish) received an Excellence in Teaching Award. At the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011, he was recognized for his energy, passion, and commitment in the classroom, in addition to his innovative technique of using music as a component of teaching textual analysis. Professor Michael Handelsman was also awarded the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association's "Jacqueline Elliott Award for Teaching and Service in Higher Education" for 2010. This award recognizes the recipient's outstanding contributions to his/her institution, to colleagues, and to foreign language organizations. This award is named for Jacqueline Elliott, a professor of French in our department, who founded the TFLTA in the 1960's, and the formal presentation of this award occurred at the TFLTA annual meeting in November 2010.
  • Professor Gregory Kaplan (Spanish) was awarded a Lindsay Young Professorship in recognition of his distinguished teaching and scholarship at the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011.
  • Professor Mary McAlpin (French) received an Excellence in Teaching Award. At the Chancellor's Honors Banquet in April 2011, she was recognized for the perfect balance she maintains among questions, answers, lectures, videos, and handouts, which she skillfully employs in order to create interactive classes.
