RUSS 453 - Cultural Forms of Protest in Russia
Instructor: Dr. Pervukhin
The Russian Program's newest course, Cultural Forms of Protest in Russia, explores why culture was so important in Russian society throughout the last two centuries, and then turns to the evolution of modern cultural protest with emphasis on current politics in Russia under Putin. The ideology of Putin’s regime pretends to be based on “conservative values” of the pre-revolutionary past, but in fact it possesses the messianic zeal that inspired both the Russian and the Soviet Empires. Since forms of criticism and dissent to the tsarist and Soviet regime changed with changing times, course materials include literary fiction, media, video, and acts of post-Soviet actionism. This course is essentially multidisciplinary, as it combines the discussion of political, media, cultural, and aesthetic problems.
It also addresses the key role played in modern Russian intellectual live by Facebook. This social media platform, for Russians, is principally different from its English/American use, as it is Russia's only free venue for public debate and uncensored information. Materials from the most recent Russian discussions on politics, history, and culture inside Russia and its international activities will be presented in simultaneous English translation.
